Congratulations to Carolyn Makey, advisor in the Academic Exploration Program, for being named Outstanding Employee of the Quarter for June-August 2012. Makey has been a member of the university community as an employee since November 2005, when she started in the NUOP Office as an academic skills specialist.

A quote from her supervisor said, “Carolyn Makey is the type of employee every supervisor hopes to have in their office. She goes out of her way to help everyone: colleagues, students and families. There is never a time when she questions something that is asked of her. Instead her response is, ‘Is there anything else I can do?’ We have implemented many new procedures in the Academic Exploration Program over the last two years and she is always on board with the changes.

“In addition, during a year when the recruitment efforts for the university underwent an overhaul, Carolyn went above and beyond my expectations. Even with short notice, she met with prospective students and their families, made phone calls to those who had applied but not deposited and recruited at various events, even if it meant coming in on the weekend. Her welcoming demeanor and personable nature are a joy to be around and she makes all individuals she encounters feel important.”

Her supervisor also had this to say about Carolyn’s commitment to the Niagara University community and the Vincentian values: “Carolyn embodies Niagara’s mission to develop the whole person – mind, body, heart and soul – for the benefit of one’s personal and professional life in the work she does with advisement. She is a patient listener and, even when issues arise outside of a student’s academic career (though impacts it nonetheless), she works to assist in solving a problem to help the student in succeeding. There have been multiple difficult situations that arose and Carolyn went above and beyond to reach out to students, faculty, staff and parents to ensure that the student’s best interests came first.”

Comments from one nomination said, “Carolyn is hard working and dedicated to the students of Niagara University as well as the university as a whole. Carolyn is professional and friendly.”

Another nomination spoke of Makey’s attitude and commitment. “Carolyn shows great concern for her students’ well-being. She is well aware of on- and off-campus resources to assist her students in being successful at Niagara. Her former NUOP students continue to seek out her knowledge and Carolyn will make every effort to assist them.”

Niagara University would again like to congratulate Carolyn Makey on being named Outstanding Employee of the Quarter for June-August 2012.
