Niagara University lost a member of its family when Pfc. Theodore “Matt” Glende was killed over the weekend while serving in Afghanistan.
The Department of Defense announced that Glende, 23, died July 27, in Kharwar, Logar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small-arms fire. It has been reported that Glende was administering aid to his fellow soldiers when he was wounded.
“The Niagara University community is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own,” said the Rev. Joseph L. Levesque, C.M., Niagara University president. “Matt was called to serve and made the ultimate sacrifice for God and Country. We extend our sincerest sympathy and prayers to the Glende family during this most difficult time.”
Glende had been married to his wife, Alexandria, for just three months.
A memorial page on Facebook has been created, allowing friends, family and soldiers to express their grief over the loss of the Rochester native.
