Son of Tops Shooting Victim Is Featured Speaker During Niagara University’s Social Justice Speaker Series

Mark Talley, whose mother, Geraldine Talley, was one of the 10 African Americans killed during the May 14, 2022, mass shooting at Tops Friendly Markets in Buffalo, N.Y., will speak about how that tragic event motivated him to launch his non-profit organization, Agents for Advocacy, during a presentation hosted by Niagara University’s Vincentian Center for Justice in coordination with the Niagara University Black Student Union, the Intercultural Engagement Center, and the Peace & Justice Studies Association.

As a college student, Patrick Byrne didn’t take advantage of the extracurricular opportunities he had to gain valuable experience in his field of accounting and to connect with professionals in the industry. He made up for lost time after graduation, however, by finding his niche—cybersecurity—and focusing on professional development through conferences and networking. Today, he is chief information security officer at Evans Bank and a Buffalo Business First “30 under 30” honoree.

The Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., Honored for Lasting Impact to Niagara Falls Community

The Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., president of Niagara University, received Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center’s Nancy Gara Spirit Award at the Premier, the hospital’s annual black-tie event, on Jan. 20, 2024. The award honors the late Gara, a respected banking executive and former board member of NFMMC widely admired for her enduring optimism and steadfast commitment to community service.

Rev. Paul L. Golden, Former President of Niagara University, Passes Away

The Rev. Paul L. Golden, C.M., who served as president of Niagara University from 1995-1999, passed away peacefully on Jan. 20, 2024, at St. Mary’s of the Barrens in Perryville, Mo. He was 85 years old.
