Discussion of Black Disability Politics Kicks Off Series of Events Hosted by Ostapenko Center for Ethics in Medicine and Healthcare

Dr. Sami Schalk, associate professor of gender and women’s studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, presented “Articulating and Enacting Black Disability Politics in the National Black Women's Health Project” at Niagara University on Feb. 12, leading off a series of events sponsored by NU’s Ostapenko Center for Ethics in Medicine and Healthcare.

Religious Scholar to Lead Film Screening and Discussion on Race, Religion, and Justice at Niagara University

Niagara University’s Ostapenko Center for Race, Equity, & Mission is hosting a film screening and discussion on race, religion, and justice featuring Dr. Jamal-Dominque Hopkins, associate professor of Christian scriptures at Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary. Dr. Hopkins will show two short films and lead an iconographic analysis of the movies during the event, which takes place Feb. 29 at 5:30 p.m. in Dunleavy Hall, Room 127. It is free and open to the public.

Niagara University’s Holzschuh College of Business Administration Hosts Cybersecurity Expert

As a college student, Patrick Byrne didn’t take advantage of the extracurricular opportunities he had to gain valuable experience in his field of accounting and to connect with professionals in the industry. He made up for lost time after graduation, however, by finding his niche—cybersecurity—and focusing on professional development through conferences and networking. Today, he is chief information security officer at Evans Bank and a Buffalo Business First “30 under 30” honoree.

The Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., Honored for Lasting Impact to Niagara Falls Community

The Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., president of Niagara University, received Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center’s Nancy Gara Spirit Award at the Premier, the hospital’s annual black-tie event, on Jan. 20, 2024. The award honors the late Gara, a respected banking executive and former board member of NFMMC widely admired for her enduring optimism and steadfast commitment to community service.
