Averl Harbin has been appointed to the position of dean of students at Niagara University. She has served as interim dean of students since January 2021.

Harbin joined Niagara University in 2015 as the director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs. In that role, she developed, implemented, and assessed programs and activities designed to promote diversity awareness on Niagara’s campus. In addition, she has been a mentor and trusted resource for students from diverse backgrounds, and has educated students and other constituents on issues related to diversity, bystander intervention, and inclusion.

Harbin began her career as the residence hall director at Assumption College before going to Eastern Connecticut State University to serve as the hall director, assistant to the director of housing, and later, the coordinator of multicultural student activities. After four years at ECSU, she was named the director of Multicultural Affairs at the State University of New York at Fredonia. In her eight years at Fredonia, she worked closely with the Admissions and Campus Life offices to promote multicultural opportunities across campus.

Harbin earned a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Potsdam and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Central Connecticut State University.
