Jordan Smith of the Mohawk Nation, Bear Clan (right), and Kehala Smith of Turtle Clan demonstrated traditional Haudenosaunee social dances on Nov. 11, 2019, in the Gallagher Center lounge. The event was part of the programming for Native American Heritage Month, sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

The two, who wore handmade regalia with symbolic decorations, shared stories and songs about the dances, which are aspects of prayer. Some of the dances they performed included the New Women's Shuffle, which honors women as the givers of life; the Round Dance, a dance of friendship; and Corn, Robin, and Pigeon dances, which celebrate nature and give thanks to the Creator for the bounty he has given. Niagara University faculty and students were invited to join in the dances.
