The Ultimate Author’s Chair is a new family event that is being be held at Canalside this summer. And thanks to Niagara University’s Family Literacy Center, select faculty, teachers, librarians, pre-service teachers and local authors will be reading stories to children there every Thursday morning through Aug. 25.
Each free event takes place 11 a.m.-12 p.m. at the big, yellow Adirondack chair at Canalside in downtown Buffalo.
Children will also have an opportunity to choose a book to take home with them, along with souvenirs from Niagara University. Following the read-aloud session, families are encouraged to participate in a host of fun and engaging activities presented by Western New York Family Magazine.
For additional information about this event and/or to become a reader, contact Dr. Donna Kester Phillips at ude.aragain@spllhpkd.
Housed within Niagara University’s College of Education, the Family Literacy Center is an on-campus educational opportunity for graduate students to demonstrate teaching while enhancing the literacy performance of at-risk readers and their families. The center’s programs focus on improving reading, writing and listening skills among children while supporting the literacy and basic skills of the family itself.
The center is a valuable community resource for diagnosing and remediating reading difficulties. Its programs, which are staffed by NU graduate students, focus on improving reading, writing and listening skills among children while supporting the literacy and basic skills of the family itself.
In addition to the diagnostic and remediation services, the Family Literacy Center also offers an Enrichment Book Club Program.
For more information on the Literacy Center and the programs available, please contact Dr. Kathleen McGrath at 716.286.8309 or ude.aragain@gck.
