Niagara University in Ontario piloted its Career Boost program on June 25, 2024. The interactive workshop on Canadian workplace culture was held on the Vaughan campus.
LeChelle Saunders, manager of student services and international student advising, led the session, which included discussions on employment requirements for international students, self-awareness, intercultural competency in the workplace, and job search considerations and assumptions. NUO Peer Navigators Garuav Sahu, Stephanie Umeokeke, Blessing Omenka, and Onyekachukwu Patrick Ojemaye helped to facilitate the conversation among those in attendance.
“The Career Boost program collaborates with NUO faculty, the NU Career Centre, and external stakeholders to deliver workshops which aim to support students and address employers' gaps in knowledge regarding their employment,” said Saunders. “The program aims to create a diverse, psychologically safe, and sustainable early career ecosystem for all students, with emphasis on those who are newcomers to Canada.”
The next session, which focuses on articulating achievements and will include a brief introduction to resume writing and interviewing, is scheduled for July 9.
