Robert Murphy has been named senior vice president for enrollment and strategic initiatives at Niagara University. His first day on Monteagle Ridge is July 17.

Murphy comes to Niagara from Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS), where he served as the vice president of enrollment and dean of admissions since 2009. In that role, he experienced great success in several key performance indicators, including increased enrollment, elevated college academic profile and increased net tuition revenue. His achievements in these areas were featured in a 2013 article in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Murphy originally joined HWS in 2004 as the director of the Salisbury Center for Career Services, an area in which he also improved strategy and outcomes. Prior to HWS, his higher education experience included positions at Carnegie Mellon University and Amherst College.

In his new role at Niagara, Murphy will lead the enrollment functions for undergraduate and graduate admissions, marketing as it relates to admissions and career services, as well as other key strategic initiatives.

“Bob’s proven track record in enrollment management, marketing and career development will be a tremendous asset to Niagara University,” said the Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., president of Niagara University. “Furthermore, his intentional emphasis on building meaningful relationships with students, parents, faculty and staff as a springboard to positive outcomes correlates with our Catholic and Vincentian focus on individualized education.”

Matching Niagara’s Vincentian spirit, Murphy has been active in his community, serving on numerous boards in Upstate/Central New York, including the YMCA, the Boys and Girls Club, Hospice, the United Way and Samaritan Health Services, among others. He was also a congressional appointment to President Clinton’s Council on Small Business.

Murphy earned his bachelor’s degree from Norwich University and his M.Ed. and C.A.S. from Springfield College.

Prior to working in higher education, Murphy spent 25 years in management and senior executive positions with PepsiCo International, Pepsi North America, Pepsi Bottling and the Scott Paper Co. He also served as a captain in the United States Marine Corps.
