Sarah Volmy, a Niagara University junior studying sociology, will compete in the National American Miss Pageant at Disneyland.

Niagara University junior Sarah Volmy was crowned 2015 National American Miss New York at the state pageant held last month in New Brunswick, N.J.

The Lockport native advanced to compete in the national pageant at Disneyland in November. Volmy will have the opportunity to win a share of the more than $500,000 in cash and prizes that is awarded at nationals.

“It’s a great feeling to be able to represent Niagara University, God, my parents and the young women who are determined to make their short- and long-term goals a reality,” Volmy said.

Volmy, who has been involved with the National American Miss Pageantsince an early age, credited much of her recent success in the competition to her involvement at Niagara University. Pageant entrants are scored on their on their participation in community service, interview acumen, personal introductions and formal wear.

While majoring in sociology and minoring in women’s studies and law and jurisprudence at NU – “I hope to become an attorney,” Volmy is a member of the university’s Honors program, works in its Admissions Office, performs duties as a campus tour guide and volunteers regularly for community service through the Learn and Serve Office. She is also very active in her church, where she assists with Sunday school classes during semester breaks and helps children get sponsored for Bible camps.

“Being at Niagara University for two years has definitely helped me grow as a person and has contributed largely to my wonderful performance at the National American Miss Pageant,” Volmy stated. “Niagara University has instilled in me how important it is to carry Vincentian values wherever you go, because there are individuals everywhere who need a shoulder to lean on. Niagara really encourages its students to go out and be the change that they want to see in the world.”

Volmy is the daughter of Dejasson and Marlene Volmy.

The National American Miss Pageant is dedicated to celebrating America’s greatness and encouraging its future leaders. The pageant program is based on inner beauty, as well as poise and presentation. Emphasis is placed on the importance of gaining self-confidence, learning new skills and good attitudes, competition, and setting and achieving goals.
