Sharon Green

Sharon Green, coordinator of instructional services in Niagara University’s Office of Academic Support, is the 2017 recipient of National Association for Developmental Education’s (NADE) Gladys Shaw Outstanding Service to Developmental Students Award.

Green was presented with the award, which recognizes long-term service to developmental education students, during NADE’s March 2 conference in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The award is named in honor of Gladys Reed Shaw, who was a developmental education faculty member at El Paso Community College and the director of the Tutoring and Learning Center and director of Student Support Services at University of Texas at El Paso. She was instrumental in the creation of certification standards for the College Reading and Learning Association and NADE, and served as treasurer of both organizations. She is a fellow of the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations, and she was inducted into the El Paso Commission for Women Hall of Fame in 2010.

Green has worked at Niagara University since 1998, overseeing developmental course offerings in its Office of Academic Support. She teaches a developmental reading/writing course as well as Introduction to College Reading in the NU Opportunity Program. In addition, Green chaired or co-chaired Niagara Reads, the university’s freshman summer reading program, from 2002-2010, and serves as the faculty advisor to the Niagara University Lions Club.

Established in 1976, NADE seeks to improve the theory and practice of developmental education at all levels of the educational spectrum, the professional capabilities of developmental educators, and the design of programs to prepare developmental educators.
