Dr. Peter Butera, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, begins the college's 45th annual Day of Recogntiton.

On Friday, May 16, students and faculty from Niagara University’s College of Arts & Sciences gathered in the Gallagher Center to honor their own for their academic, community service, and leadership achievements during the 45th annual Day of Recognition.

Initiated by the Rev. Joseph Levesque, C.M., then dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, this year’s event included a tribute for Dr. William Martin, who passed away on Oct. 29, 2024. He was a professor of English at NU for 43 years.

The ceremony honored students with awards from across the college’s 25 academic departments, as well as several faculty members. Those recognized this year with faculty awards included Dr. Bridget Moriarty, associate professor of theatre, who received the Excellence in Service Award; Dr. Joel Louwsma, associate professor of mathematics, who received the Excellence in Scholarship Award; and Rebecca Roessler, ’16, M.S.’17 , an adjunct faculty member in the criminal justice department, who received the Award for Excellence in Teaching (part-time). Dr. Timothy Osberg, who is retiring after 43  years as a professor of psychology, received the Award for Excellence in Teaching (full-time).

In addition, Inclusive Excellence Awards were given to Dr. Carrie Glenn, assistant professor of history and director of the Women’s Studies program; and to theatre major Jamarion Evans-Stapleton and history major MaryGrace Mancini. Ten students were recognized for their completion of the Ethics in Medicine and Healthcare Program, an extracurricular academic program that enables students to deepen their understanding of the ethical issues and challenges that exist in healthcare and medicine.

The 2025 Day of Recognition also featured remarks from the Rev. James J. Maher. C.M., Niagara University president, and Dr. Peter Butera, dean of the college.
