Discussion on Popular Music and Public Health Kicks Off Niagara University’s 2025 Literature and Social Justice Speaker Series

A presentation by musician, writer, and assistant professor of music at Boston University Dan DiPiero kicks off the second season of Niagara University’s Literature and Social Justice Speaker Series. The event, which is free and open to the public, takes place on Monday, Sept. 29, in Glynn Hall Room 405/406/407 on the Niagara University campus.

Following a 12:30  meet and greet, Dr. DiPiero will discuss his book, “Big Feelings: Queer and Feminist Indie Rock After Riot Grrrl,” at 1:30 p.m. His presentation, “Fire is Coming: On Popular Music and Feeling Badly” begins at 3 p.m.and will focus on the relationship between popular music and public health, including the experiences of depression, anxiety, trauma, and the socio-political dynamics that contextualize such increasingly widespread feelings.

The program, presented by the Rose Bente Lee Ostapenko Center for Ethics in Medicine and Healthcare and organized by Dr. Ajitpaul Mangat, assistant professor of English, brings merging and established scholars to facilitate discussions on how humanistic inquiry, specifically literary criticism, can contribute to social justice.
