The fourth annual Ramadan Iftar was held at Niagara University in Ontario (NUO), this past week. The Iftar aims to provide an opportunity for different cultures to come together to combat Islamophobic biases, learn about Muslims and Islam, and facilitate intercultural harmony.
NUO welcomed about 60 members of the community, which sees the event continually growing from approximately 15 people in its first year. Guests included members of Vaughan Public Library, the YMCA, York Regional Police, representatives from a local mosque, and faculty from York University and the University of Toronto. This event reinforces community connections, and allows for further discussion around potential collaborations.

Dr. Asma Ahmed, chair and assistant professor of Ontario Educational Studies, said, “It was especially meaningful to see families attending with their children and sharing the evening together. Seeing it grow each year has been a reminder of the power of community and relationship-building across our local institutions.”

This event has become a meaningful annual tradition for members of the community, and seeks to continue its growth for years to come. Dr. Ahmed would like to offer a sincere thank you to the volunteers and community partners who helped make the evening possible. Special thanks to Hiam, Franco, Amrina, Ihechi, Shehani, Asad, and Khalid.
