Original drawings created by the young patients at Oishei Children’s Hospital will be featured on skates worn by the Niagara University men’s hockey team and referees during Niagara’s annual Division I men’s exhibition game against USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program on Friday, Oct. 24, at Dwyer Arena.
The university partnered with SkateSkins®, the customizable hockey skate wrap brand, and Oishei to use the children’s artwork as inspiration for the skate wraps. After the game, all game-worn SkateSkins® will be auctioned off, with proceeds benefiting Oishei Children’s Hospital and its foundation.
“We’re thrilled to welcome members of the Oishei team, patients, and the champion kids who helped bring these skate designs to life,” said Phil Rhodes, director of hockey operations at Niagara University. “For hockey fans in Western New York, this is a unique opportunity to experience the excitement of college hockey, watch some of the top American prospects for the 2026 NHL Draft, and support the incredible work happening at Oishei Children’s Hospital.”
“This project is a reminder that hockey has the power to connect people far beyond the rink,” added Matthew Keeler, founder and owner of SkateSkins®. “These kids poured their hearts into the artwork, and seeing it come to life on the ice is something special. It’s about giving them a moment to shine and showcasing their creations.”
“At Oishei Children’s Hospital, everything we do is centered around our patients and their families,” said Stephen Turkovich, MD, president of Oishei Children’s Hospital. “This partnership with SkateSkins® and Niagara University brings joy and creativity to the rink while celebrating the incredible spirit of our kids. Seeing their artwork come to life in such a meaningful way is a reminder of the strength and inspiration they bring to all of us.”
Every fan in attendance at the October 24 matchup will receive a custom rally towel, presented by Spicy Pickle, Gallo, Choose Love Wine, Spur Vodka, Hope Totes, Niagara Barber Co., Enduraphin, Vigilink, and the Niagara Falls Police Club. A limited run of merchandise featuring artwork from the same young artists will also be available for purchase at the game. All proceeds from merchandise sales will go directly to the Children’s Hospital of Buffalo Foundation. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the warmups to see the custom SkateSkins designs take the ice for the first time.
