Social Work Department Observes National Social Work Month

In observance of National Social Work Month, the Niagara University Department of Social Work is hosting a series of events throughout March. This year’s theme is “Compassion + Action.”

On-campus events include two simulations. The first one, on Alzheimer’s, takes place at 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 6. The second, which will show attendees how to protect young people from substance abuse, takes place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 17. Both will be held in the Gallagher Center Multipurpose Room.

In addition, UBMD will give a presentation on dementia at noon on Tuesday, March 4, in Bisgrove 350, and the Social Work Student Association and Phi Alpha will be holding bake sales from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. March 4-6 and March 25-27 in the Gallagher Center.

Off campus, SWSA members and social work faculty will present at the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors annual conference in Las Vegas on March 15, and on March 30, they will travel to Washington, D.C., on a political advocacy trip with students from the university’s Black Students Union and Latinos Unidos.

On March 20, the Niagara University Ostapenko Center for Race, Equity & Mission will sponsor its 8th Annual Youth Action Conference at the Niagara Falls Convention Center. This statewide event is designed and led by the region’s most active high school and college student leaders. This year’s theme is “Leading with Love and Defending Justice.”
