On Oct. 7, 2025, Lisa Catanese, director of human resources at West Herr Automotive Group, spoke to more than 70 business students about how to successfully transition from college to career. Her presentation, “Are You Ready to Use Your Degree?” offered practical strategies for standing out in a competitive job market.
Catanese’s engaging and insightful presentation provided students with actionable advice and a deeper understanding of what it takes to launch a successful career after graduation, including the importance of understanding their skills and qualifications,
“Be realistic about your strengths,” she advised, noting that employers value authenticity and self-awareness.
Catanese also emphasized the importance of both classroom learning and hands-on experiences such as internships, volunteer work, and student organizations, and of working with Career Services to tailor each application to the position being sought. She urged students to ensure their resumes are professional, that they highlight key achievements, and that they are carefully proofread.
Finding the right job, she said, requires the same focus and dedication as a full-time position.
“Make finding a job a job,” she said, encouraging students to research organizations, understand their values, and take the process seriously.
Catanese also shared tips for successful interviewing, reminding students to be prepared, professional, and personable. She stressed the value of researching the company, arriving early, dressing appropriately, and following up with personal thank-you notes.
Finally, she spoke about what employers truly value beyond starting salary—respect, growth, and commitment.
“Titles and pay will come with time and proven performance,” she explained, adding that compensation often includes benefits, career development opportunities, and continued education.
“We were honored to welcome Lisa Catanese to the Holzschuh College of Business Administration,” said Dr. Lisa Williams, associate professor of management. “Her expertise and compelling message resonated with our students, many of whom stayed to speak with her after the event. We are grateful to Lisa for generously sharing her valuable time and insights, which will no doubt have an impact on the community for years to come.”
“After attending Mrs. Catanese lecture, I feel well-informed on how to prepare for finding a job and what companies are looking for,” added Megan Engler, a first-year integrative management major.
