Niagara University in Ontario Education Professors Receive Insight Development Grant from Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council

Niagara University in Ontario faculty Dr. Zuhra Abawi, assistant professor of education and chair of the Department of Educational Leadership, and Dr. Asma Ahmed, assistant professor and chair of the Bachelor of Professional Studies program, received an Insight Development Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). They were awarded $58,320 for a project co-authored with Dr. Naved Bakali, assistant professor of anti-racism education at Windsor University, entitled “Ontario Preservice Teachers’ Preparedness for Enacting Responsive Pedagogical Practices with Muslims.”

Niagara University Receives $150,000 Grant from Alden Trust to Create New Student Spaces

Niagara University students will have additional places to collaborate and engage with peers and faculty, thanks to a $150,000 grant from the George I. Alden Trust. The funding will support the renovation of several learning spaces in Glynn Hall, one of the four premier buildings in Niagara University’s heritage footprint.

The Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., Niagara University president, with Vincentian Heritage Convocation honorees Sister Carol Keehan, D.C., former president/CEO of Catholic Health Association of the U.S.; Dr. Joseph B. Polat, executive director of the Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School and Rochester Academy of Science; Rev. Craig D. Pridgen, pastor of the True Bethel Church in Niagara Falls; Dr. Shannon Risk, associate professor of history at Niagara University; and Olivia Sheldon, a member of NU’s Class of 2024.

Dr. Laura Sarchet, assistant professor in Niagara University’s College of Education, published an article in the Journal of Disability Studies in Education that explored how the experiences of disabled and neurodivergent faculty in higher education differ from those of neurotypical and nondisabled faculty.

Niagara University, in partnership with the Hispanic Heritage Council of Western New York, is hosting two events during Hispanic Heritage Month that highlight the history and contributions of Hispanics in the Buffalo/Niagara region. More than 62 million people identified as ethnically Hispanic—people whose ancestors come from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America—according to the 2020 U.S. census, making it the country’s second largest, and one of the fastest-growing, racial or ethnic minority.
