Dr. Regine Chung, assistant professor of clinical mental health counseling at Niagara University, was recognized with the Student Research Award by the Association for Play Therapy during its annual international conference in Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 15-20, 2024. Dr. Chung received the honor for her study of the substantive impact of Child-Centered Play Therapy on the social-emotional development and behavioral challenges of autistic children.

Dr. Caitlin Riegel Hosts International Conference in South Africa

Dr. Caitlin Riegel, assistant professor in the College of Education and president of the International Society for Educational Planning, hosted the 2024 ISEP conference in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), South Africa, Oct. 7–10, 2024. The event, which was co-sponsored by Nelson Mandela University, St. Cloud State University, and Niagara University, brought together presenters and attendees from across eight countries to discuss ways of “Imagining Education Through Engagement: Planning to Unlock the Full Potential of Individuals and Communities.”

Niagara University in Ontario Education Professors Receive Insight Development Grant from Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council

Niagara University in Ontario faculty Dr. Zuhra Abawi, assistant professor of education and chair of the Department of Educational Leadership, and Dr. Asma Ahmed, assistant professor and chair of the Bachelor of Professional Studies program, received an Insight Development Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). They were awarded $58,320 for a project co-authored with Dr. Naved Bakali, assistant professor of anti-racism education at Windsor University, entitled “Ontario Preservice Teachers’ Preparedness for Enacting Responsive Pedagogical Practices with Muslims.”

Dr. Jenifer Willson Named 2024 Woman of Distinction

Dr. Jenifer Willson, assistant professor in the clinical mental health counseling program at Niagara University, was named a “Woman of Distinction” on May 17, 2024, for her critical work in educating mental health counseling professionals. She was one of nine women who were honored for their extraordinary contributions to the community by New York State Assemblymember Monica Wallace.

NU Alumna Publishes in Yale University Journal of Biology and Medicine

An article by Rosina E. Mete, M.S.'13, Ph.D.’18, was recently published in the Yale University Journal of Biology and Medicine. The article, “Examining the Impact of Social Support on Psychological Well-Being Among Canadian Individuals With COPD: Implications for Government Policies,” was based on the doctoral dissertation research she completed at Niagara University, which examined the impact of social support on emotional well-being among Canadian individuals with COPD. It was also selected as an Editor’s Pick for the journal’s chronic illness issue.
