Holzschuh College of Business Administration Hosts Inaugural Financial Literacy Trade Show

Students in “Introduction to Financial Literacy: Developing a Financial Plan Based on Your Values,” a new course in the Holzschuh College of Business Administration, shared what they learned throughout the semester at a financial literacy trade show on Nov. 20 in Niagara University’s Bieler Institute of Business Ethics.

The course, taught by associate professor of accounting Patrick O’Meara, explored several socio-economic facets of financial literacy, giving students an understanding of the various financial products and services available, as well as the challenges they and their contemporaries face in using these products.

As part of the course, students formed teams to research a specific aspect of personal financial literacy, such as credit cards, student loans, credit scores, and retirement, and designed brochures and developed presentations for the trade show.

Finance professionals from Northwest Bank, KeyBank, Citibank, Bank on Buffalo, and M&T Bank, and representatives from Lewiston-Porter High School judged the teams based on the accuracy and appeal of their brochures and presentation, how they engaged with attendees at the trade show, and their ability to work collaboratively. The winning team of Rose Woodfield, Lina Nicoloff, and Jayden Brown, aka Justice League, won the competition—and the coveted “Get Out of the Final Exam Free” card—with their presentation on getting and keeping good credit.
