Niagara Students Participate in Poverty Simulation

Niagara University students participated in the Community Action Poverty Simulation on Monday, Sept. 21, as a part of Vincentian Heritage Week. The simulation sees students take on the identity of an individual in poverty. Through this simulation, students are given an accurate look at the general difficulties and decisions that have to be made when one is in poverty. The goal of the simulation is not to be a game, but to showcase real stories that Community Action has seen their clients go through.

Dr. Rolanda Ward, professor of social work, chair and BSW program director, said, “While no simulation can provide anyone with proficiency in the complex consequences of economic instability, the Poverty Simulation can bring awareness and compassion to our Niagara University students. More importantly, the Poverty Simulation challenges our students to consider how they will live out their future professional careers, as well as their commitment to service, dignity, and the common good.”

The simulation was coordinated by Dr. Ward and Dr. David Taylor, professor of criminal justice. The simulation was facilitated by Marg Domagalski, co-founder and president of Niagara Heritage of Hope & Service Inc.

Dr. Taylor said, “While a simulation itself cannot fully replicate or capture the experience of living in poverty, it does give participants a glimpse into the challenges and struggles that people often face trying to make ends meet on limited resources. The simulation also, however, captures the resilience and determination that people have to taka care of themselves and their family.”

Niagara Universities Vincentian Heritage week celebrates and educates the campus community on everything that makes Niagara, Vincentian. Throughout the week, our Niagara University community — students, faculty, administrators and staff — engaged in a variety of initiatives that promote peace, justice, the common good, and the care and inclusion of all.
