Niagara University alumna Maryalice Demler, ’86, is among the broadcasting professionals who will be inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in recognition of their lasting contributions to the Western New York broadcasting landscape and beyond.
Demler anchors Channel 2 News “On Your Side” at 5, 6, and 11 p.m. at WGRZ-TV, the NBC affiliate in Buffalo, N.Y. “Buffalo Nightly News,” the half-hour news program she recently launched, has received both ratings and critical acclaim. She has been recognized for journalistic excellence by the Associated Press, New York Emmy Awards, New York State Broadcasters, and the Edward R. Murrow Awards.
Demler has also done extensive live reporting, covering such notable world events as World Youth Day with Pope John Paul II in Toronto. She reported from the Vatican for the funeral of Pope John Paul II and for the papal conclave that elected Pope Francis. Demler also provided extended coverage of Pope Benedict’s visit to New York City and Pope Francis’ Philadelphia visit, and reported on Western New York athletes at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
A long-time volunteer in the community, Demler served over a decade each on not-for-profit boards of directors for Peaceprints of WNY, Kids Escaping Drugs Foundation, and the Tonawandas’ Canal Fest. She serves as a lector and Eucharistic minister at St. Jude the Apostle Parish in her native North Tonawanda.
Demler is an honors graduate of Niagara University with bachelor’s degrees in both political science and French. Shortly after graduation, she won the title of Miss New York and represented the Empire State in the 1990 Miss America Scholarship Pageant. Demler currently serves on the Niagara University Board of Trustees.
“Our Hall of Fame classes become more impressive every year,” said Stephen Monaco, president of the Buffalo Broadcasters Association. “Each inductee has left an indelible mark on broadcasting in Western New York and represents the excellence our industry strives for.”
The 2025 Hall of Fame dinner will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Samuel’s Grand Manor in Williamsville, N.Y.
