NU Professor and Alumna Co-Author Article Quantifying Economic Impact of High-Tech Hospital on Surrounding Neighborhoods

Dr. Ann Rensel, retired professor of management and current adjunct instructor in the computer and information sciences department, and Dr. Allyssa Wadsworth, ’17, assistant professor of economics at the University of Houston, have published an article in the Journal of Housing Research. The article, “The Socioeconomic Impact of a Large High-Tech Development Project on the Surrounding Residential Community,” examines the impact of Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo on surrounding resident demographics, residential pricing, and housing availability.

Their study, one of the first known to quantify the economic impact of a new high-technology hospital on the adjacent neighborhoods, determined that those neighborhoods experienced increases in residential property prices, and that the associated increase in property taxes impacted the existing property owners’ ability to remain on the property.
